Schmuck Alert: OH. MY. GOD!!!

We've all been there (okay, just those of us with tripod hickies on various parts of our bodies), covering a structure fire when a relative, friend or neighborhood weirdo demands we leave immediately. AWK-WERD! I always feel bad for these people - for if they're sweatin' MY presence, it's usually just a case of redirected frustration. That said, I got every right to loiter with a lens - as long as I'm on public property. Good luck explaining that to someone watching their neighbor's/tenant's/babymama's house turn to cinders. Case in point: the following clip in which a rather scary lady demands media members leave her property, only to be walked off by an outstanding firefighter. All seems calmer until about 57 seconds in, when the lady goes momentarily mental...

Now go check out newzjunky.com for all the greasy details...

Momentarily mental?

While I feel for the distraught burned out woman, no need to attack 'ol Amy. She could have had a real TV moment with an interview. I sent Amy a purple Heart. Who pays for the damaged camera? Things that make you go hmmm.

ok, yeah, she's mental... but the schmuck here seems to be the guy that calls for her arrest after she tips over the one camera and then goes for his. I think the more successful schmuck posts are the ones that show the schmuck wildly over-reacting to the situation or abusing their power in some way. This woman's home was burning down and that's enough for me understand her behavior.

Are you kidding me? You obviously haven't had a job that required you to deal with people like this on a regular basis. That lady deserved to be arrested, whether her house was or was not burning is not at issue. This is basic assault/destruction of property. Our First Amendment gives ALL of us the right to peaceably assemble in public areas, no matter if we're protesters or members of the working media.

What if it were your $20,000 camera?

I know she was being charged at by crazy lady, but walking away from the camera on sticks wasn't the best choice. The guy in the blue coat had the photog reaction.

Beware the distraught. They've scared the crap out of me more than a few times. Like that time some cops killed a kid in the projects, and a beer bottle whizzed by my head as I exited.... among others.
